Nicolas Cage is master of the puzzled expression. Whether this comes extra naturally to him or not, I cannot say. But in this movie, Cage runs around a lot (a lot) looking perplexed yet intrigued, even though the questions that he’s investigating are downright ridiculous, even for a paranormal movie. I guess they call that charisma, to keep the viewers attention, somewhat, despite the story being pretty lowly. It’s time for another Nicolas Cage hefty budget VOD ...

This movie, The Loft, with its curious majority of 10/10 ratings on the IMDb as of writing this despite being critically mauled right now (see evidence of vote rigging on the IMDb), is a frustrating mess of flash forwards, flash backwards, flash sidewards and flash double-backwards sectors, which really drains the desire to continue watching the movie. The fact that the film was in the can in 2011 but is only really now getting its big release might tell ...

Renny Harlin’s filmography varies wildly in quality, ranging from fantastic action films (Die Hard 2, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Deep Blue Sea) to borderline unbearable dreck (Driven, 12 Rounds). After showing a slight glimmer of hope with the mildly competent 5 Days of War, Harlin is back in the doldrums with Devil’s Pass (also known as The Dyatlov Pass Incident). Bewilderingly, this is actually a found footage horror picture, looking to cash in on the Blair Witch Project phenomena about ...

Is prisoners a movie for fit for the male demographic/audience? The answer is yes sir, easily a drama/thriller to bring break out a six pack for. I might even say that this is my favorite Hugh Jackman role, an actor I don’t really like, even ahead of X-Men (2000). At last, the guy goes all feral and wild fucking savage. Alright, so maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it’s one of his hardest turns yet and part ...

Black Butterfly is a movie acquired by LionsGate some time ago, a remake of the French TV movie Papillon Noir, a 2008 movie that actually starred Eric Cantona. In this U.S.-set remake, Brian Goodman (one of those acting ‘faces you know’) comes in as a support actor but also to try his hand at directing for the first time since 2008’s What Doesn’t Kill You. He has also recruited Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and a few different ...

Kill ‘Em All (2017) This is one of the worst movies I’ve seen in years. Maybe one of the top five worst I’ve ever seen and God knows, I’ve watched some trash. It’s Jean Claude Van Damme’s worst movie ever, as far as I can remember right now anyway — most of his stuff this side of the 1990’s has been pretty bad to various degrees. It’s a thoroughly depressing stretch of awful. In this one, the latest DTV ...

Wheelman (2017) If you’re going to try the gimmick of filming an entire (most of it) action/thriller from inside a vehicle, you really need another gimmick on top of that. Maybe even two, such as some type of big and interesting narrative twist and a unique sense of speed that you can only experience inside hurtling car. We don’t really get either here, unfortunately. Frank Grillo plays the title character, who must deliver two criminals to a bank heist, then ...

Those Saw movies used to be good, at least the first one. There were so many sequels I don’t really remember if I enjoyed any, maybe the second one wasn’t too bad. The ‘matter of time’ part has passed and now there is another one out there. Ideally, this kind of update comes when someone offers a premise that is too good to resist, but in this case it’s just another case of the money being too ...

The Ritual opens with a group of men in their 30’s discussing a potential ‘man’s trip’, a suitable getaway/holiday. They consider Ibiza and Amsterdam, but conclude that these are boring venues for 20 year olds. Vegas is another option, sort of like The Hangover, and another unique idea is to go hiking through a trail in the Swedish wilderness. And so begins Netflix’s new movie, which rips off Predator, The Blair Witch and The Wicker Man. Based on ...

It seems that Pierce Brosnan and Guy Pearce are easier to hire for work these days. Poor old Brosnan in particular has even been hired by the Indians for some bogus mouth wash commercials, that has left Brosnan upset. Now they’re back on the VOD circuit for The Spinning Man, a movie labelled as a mystery thriller. Although there isn’t much in the way of mystery going on, it could have otherwise been ‘average’ were it not ...
