Nicolas Cage is master of the puzzled expression. Whether this comes extra naturally to him or not, I cannot say. But in this movie, Cage runs around a lot (a lot) looking perplexed yet intrigued, even though the questions that he’s investigating are downright ridiculous, even for a paranormal movie. I guess they call that charisma, to keep the viewers attention, somewhat, despite the story being pretty lowly. It’s time for another Nicolas Cage hefty budget VOD ...

We should be more appreciative of this movie. At a time when The Walking Dead is too busy with melodrama to show us zombies we look back to this winner with fondness. Most of us fear remakes and with good reason – most of them are empty and cynical slop. Not Dawn Of The Dead (2004) though, which is, like its predecessor Night Of The Living Dead (1990), a successful remake. Quite a feat considering it is ...

Malaria. Ebola. Gang rape. These are the experiences I’d rather endure than be subjected to another bout of this slurry. But you know, as a fan of the old games and, y’know, zombie movies in general, my ire is no longer directed at Paul W.S. Anderson. Because to hate Paul Anderson would be like hating a 13 year old dog that can’t help pissing itself. When AICN once called him out on his Resident ...

There was once a time when a new Kevin Smith project was cause for genuine excitement and curiosity, with the indie filmmaker churning out a steady stream of clever comedies in the ’90s, beginning with his breakout effort Clerks. But starting with the 2010 turkey Cop Out, Smith’s flicks have become less and less impressive, and his downward spiral continues with 2014’s Tusk, a movie based on a random conversation from one of Smith’s many podcasts. Smith evidently wanted to ...

I was never much into those Dead Rising games myself. The comedy and weapons gimmick just didn’t do it for me. To me, real zombie games began with Resident Evil in 1996 and ended with Resident Evil Zero in the early ’00s. It’s sad that we never got a real Resident Evil movie instead of the dogshit (including the first one too) that Paul W.S. Anderson puts out. Which ironic because Anderson pulled off possibly the ...

Here is the second bear movie this year after Grizzly, another creature feature starring Thomas Jane and Billy Bob Thornton. Neither movie is particularly good, but the other one, Grizzly, is slightly better – mostly because of the bear/stunt work in that movie. This movie is kind of falsely advertised from what I remember of promotion. The trailer made it look like a couple were being stalked by both a murderous bear and a human weirdo. ...

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen any of these [REC] movies. There were three before this. ‘Found footage’ deals about a 28 Days Later-style zombie breakout in Spain. The first two movies were more than watchable despite the camera gimmick, mostly because it was honest-to-goodness horror with good effects and atmosphere. The third was, in a word, shit. It was panned by critics and fans alike because it ventured into comedy territory. People ...

This is our third of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2014 movie screenplay reviews in the past month or so. I’m sad to say that none of them are impressive as Schwarzenegger movies. The first, The Expendables 3, was a positive review for what it is (rated 8/10 although removed via studio request), good as an action ensemble feature deliberately playing to it’s strengths/cast, but not great for a Schwarzenegger movie because his role is basically another cameo. The second, ...

If you ask me, you could do worse to round off 2014 than The Guest, a a taut psychological thriller with old school ’70s thriller DNA with a lick of 21st century polish. I caught this film earlier in the year and for whatever reason did not get around to reviewing it. I watched it a while after seeing Killer Joe, which to be quite blunt was a somewhat similar movie but basically a pile of disgusting crap. ...

Sometimes a movie is just so obviously bad, even without seeing a trailer, that all you need to do in a review is to confirm a total waste of time. To put the warning shortly, follow your intuition and don’t do it. Don’t watch this movie. If for some reason you need details on the hows and whys, well, imagine a Blair Witch rip off combined with a Predator rip off. Replace the witch and Predator ...
