After sleeping through Gravity and laughing through Interstellar, (a fine unintentional comedy if ever there was one), it’s good to see a contemporary Sci-fi tell the story right – and do the science right. I am not a big Matt Damon fan, mainly because of his loudmouthed lefty nonsense and his limited acting range, but he was very good in this. The support cast were also excellent, especially the always compelling black guy who I can’t spell the name ...

This drama is part road movie, part solemn addiction story and part wet-cloth ‘comedy’. It is a small release due out this Friday that most will probably miss and if I’m being honest, most who those who do will not be losing out. This comes from upstart filmmakers Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, who gave us Half Nelson, led by Ryan Gosling. I guess the always reliable Scott Mendelsohn and the sometimes unreliable Ryan Reynolds liked what ...

Nicolas Cage is master of the puzzled expression. Whether this comes extra naturally to him or not, I cannot say. But in this movie, Cage runs around a lot (a lot) looking perplexed yet intrigued, even though the questions that he’s investigating are downright ridiculous, even for a paranormal movie. I guess they call that charisma, to keep the viewers attention, somewhat, despite the story being pretty lowly. It’s time for another Nicolas Cage hefty budget VOD ...

This film reminds me of a recent effort by Michael Biehn, The Divide, where a group of people were trapped in stuffy squalor in the midst of nuclear fallout. That film was sleazy disgusting trash – who wants to see a film high on rape and low on plot? This film, starring The Walking Dead regular Norman Reedus and Djimon Hounsou, of Gladiator and Fast 7 fame, is somewhat similar. More exploitation with B-listers stuck within very cheap ...

A mysterious former soldier named Dean returns home from service abroad, looking to catch up with his childhood friend, Jess, but finds her working in a seedy pole dancing club and under the thumb of drug dealing, Hawaiian shirt sporting thug, Connor, played by Band of Brothers’ Rick Warden in an excellent, hard-faced performance. When Dean clumsily tries to get Jess out of the grasp of Connor and his small-town criminal pals, things eventually spiral out of control, with the ...

Everyone knows that Nicolas Cage’s career hit the skids a long time ago. Nowadays, we know the drill, everything he appears in is lowly. cheap and lazy. Well, with this latest movie, given its serious subject matter and tone, people wondered whether The Runner might be one to kick-start Cage’s career if just by a little, or if only to quietly earn respect as a well executed C-Movie. It happened a while back with Joe, a pretty ...

I don’t believe in separate scoring systems for ‘bigger movies’ and DTV/VOD movies, like some might. E.g. some give a DTV a rating out of ten as a movie, then another rating out of ten as a DTV. I think the best way to take any movie, be it a TV movie or 300 million Marvel movie, is just to give it the same fair treatment as the next. That said, War Pigs is a very small ...

It’s ironic that while WWE eats itself from within by pushing a soccer mom-friendly, cookie cutter product, it still has time and resources to pump out movies that are not only violent but also so absurd as to be unintentionally funny, kind of like its hugely successful Attitude Era. After the suprisingly so so (as opposed to not atrocious) Marine 4: Moving Target comes another Cannon-like manly movie, with another WWE mainstay cashing in on his movie contract. ...

I miss the old disaster flicks where manly men like John Wayne and Steve McQueen would handle their fucking business. Nevermind those flames or impending disaster, adopt the stern face and get on with it. I had stupidly hoped for at least some of that with San Andreas, especially since The Rock is now Hollywood’s leading action man. Fool. This is a sappy girlie man movie, where the lead hero sits up front in a stationary ...

Ever wish you’d kept your French up after leaving secondary school? Or that your history lessons had been a little more comprehensive? That’s how I felt earlier today when I watched Far From Men. Set in Algeria, 1954, this was right at the beginning of the country’s long war of independence against France. The film stars Viggo Mortensen as Daru, a French school teacher tasked with escorting an Algerian prisoner, Mohammed, through the harsh, mountainous landscape to the city where he ...
