The Manly Top 10 War Movies of All Time

All movies on this list belong here because they don’t just offer some superficial scenarios with a lot of gunfire or explosions, but because of their artistic depth, actors performances, and also a large amount of realism and manliness in them. If you like this genre, it will be a great pleasure for you to watch them all. So, here are the top 10 war movies of all time:

  1. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

I will not even describe the scenario of this outstanding WW2 movie because many of the movie scenes are completely breathtaking. What have I to say about the scene during the Omaha Beach landing? Well, this one is definitely the best movie ever about the fierce fighting during the D-Day in Normandy.

The great acting performances of Matt Damon and Tom Hanks are also hard to forget after you watch this film. And, there is no doubt that this movie is also one of the best movies from the 90’s. Well, this is no empty talk, because from the first to the last scene this war movie offers huge amounts of both emotional complexity and pure manliness.  Read our full review

  1. Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Stanley Kubrick is certainly one of those best known and often praised film directors. Well, much of that praise comes because of this jewel of a war movie. It starts almost as a comedy, but many parts of it talk about the complete tragedy of the miserable Vietnam war.

My opinion is that some legendary scenes here are in the first part of the movie. Those performances of the actors who play the roles private Pyle and Sgt. Hartman are simply superb because these characters are made even better by ingenious way of the free acting.

A serious amount of manliness truly is in this movie, because rare are those people who are born with guts, but military and war make people stronger – if they avoid they destruction in the process. So, you simply must watch this anti-war film, and you will certainly not be able to forget those crazy parts in it.

  1. Apocalypse Now (1979)

This is the best-known movie about the Vietnam war, and probably one of the best manly war movies of all time. The actor’s performances are the best possible, with extremely manly tones, and here you got one of the last great Marlon Brando’s roles. Some of the manliest scenes and speeches will always live in the hearts and minds of all those who will watch this film.

  1. Platoon (1986)

A very nice film that came from the direct kind of military experience from its director Oliver Stone. This is truly one of the best war movies of the 80’s and includes one of the first major roles of that crazy Charlie Sheen. Innocence is probably the first and greatest casualty of all wars, and the real example of this is nasty Vietnam war which wasn’t even fought to be won.

  1. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)

This one is the oldest on this movies list, but it fully deserves to be here, because it’s truly incredibly nice filmed for the year 1930. One of the earliest high budget war movies and probably among the best WW1 theme films. Also, this great film is probably the first real and completely manly war movie that is made, so what else to say about it?

  1. Black Hawk Down (2001)

The military intervention is Somalia during the 90’s was a disaster, and the destruction of the Black Hawk helicopter was the symbol of it. Despite the great bravery and manliness of those outnumbered soldiers that were involved in the vicious street fights. So, based on those true facts, this movie is probably the best war film of the previous decade.

  1. The Dirty Dozen (1967)

Another fine film about the WW2. Well, there are some very original ideas in the scenario, about the twelve convicts that are going behind enemy lines on a near-suicidal mission. Ruff and full of manly behavior are that desperate and crazy guy who are sent to fight an equally crazy Nazis.

  1. American Sniper (2014)

Clint Eastwood is not just an actor who is best known for his very manly roles in famous westerns and early action movies. He is also a film director who makes high-quality motion pictures, which are by some standards, also very controversial. This movie fits into this definition perfectly.

It’s about the best American sniper soldier of all times, according to some. And, it is based on true facts and biography of that special guy, Chris Kyle, so his name will live on, as long as the history of war. I don’t think that this movie glorifies violence, but it presents a difficult and complex life of a man who ended his interesting life sadly.

  1. Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

From the „Braveheart’s“ director, this film promises a lot of excitement for all those who will watch it. This is among the best newer war movies about the WW2, there’s no mistake, it truly is. There are many realistic and great scenes here, so if you like the manly kind of a movie, then take a look to it, and you will not be disappointed at all.  Read our full review

  1. Glory (1989)

Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington are very good actors, and this movie proves just that. The amount of the manliness in this one is as big as in any well-made movie about the American Civil War. This film is one of the best movies about it, and also one of the best war movies from the late 80’s.

A Civil War is one of the nastiest forms of war that is possible even today because it tears the entrails of the nation from the inside. But it also creates great social changes during the fighting and in the aftermath. This movie perfectly describes and presents that fact, and this is the main reason why it fully deserves to appear on this war movies list.
